usually tenacious defence showed some cracks in the armour which Hebert
addressed during practice back in the Sabres’ Den as the team prepares
for the 2004-05 campaign. “We had some holes in our defence. We failed to handle their screen and they scored some easy baskets,” said Hebert. “Combined with little offensive rebounding, this resulted in very few opportunities to score which is why we only scored 44 points.” Hebert said Baily Slevinsky, with a team-high nine points, was the best Sabres player on the hard court in the final. Sophomore point guard Melanie Patterson was held to five points. This was not the case when WCHS opened against the Leduc Lady Tigers. “The girls played reasonably well,” said Hebert following an easy 78-58 win. “Missed a lot of easy shots early in the game. Rushing the shot is an issue for some players.” Bennett led the attack with 21 points, while Patterson sunk 16. Facing WP Wagner, a 4A high school based in Edmonton, the Sabres prevailed 72-42. Patterson and Bennett, with 14 and 12 points respectively, again paced the attack. Post Sara Skakum added 11. “A few more players stepped up their game and (the Sabres) really dominated this game from the opening tip,” said Hebert. |
